On Tuesday, June 17th the WTU Elections Committee announced the unofficial results of the Washington Teachers Union (WTU) Election: the full Educators Taking Action (ETA) slate won leadership of the WTU for SY25-28.
"I am proud and humbled to have this opportunity to lead the WTU into a new future. I am grateful to all those who voted, who participated, who ran, and who did the crucial work of going member to member and talking about this election. Close to 40% of our members voted, and that is a huge increase from previous elections, but also shows we still have a long way to go to building the union we want to see. I am so excited to get started on this important work with all of you." - Laura Fuchs, WTU President Elect
Our slate is already getting started, setting up our strategic plan and breaking down the weekly tasks we will accomplish for the first 12 weeks. We will start next week with visits to the WTU office to ensure that we have a smooth transition and learn all we can from those who are currently serving, including how the office itself runs, grievances that have been filed and are in progress, to our social media and communication systems.
Once we take office in early July, we plan to also get to work with member volunteers (we will be asking you, so stay tuned!) to craft plans for New Educator Orientation, Union Leadership Institute, handling IMPACT Grievances, Leave Bank Benefits and more.
This is a team effort and the work is just beginning. We appreciate all the outpouring of support from our members and look forward to continuing the conversations as we build the union our members deserve.
